We are delighted to congratulate Dr Stephanie Tyler on the award of an MBE for services to Nature Conservation in the UK and Africa in the 2021 New Year’s Honours List. Steph has been a member of the Club since 1977 and has contributed enormously to research and conservation of birdlife, and has greatly enhanced understanding of the changing environmental impacts on riverine birds, in particular dippers and grey wagtails. Her vast experience and knowledge of bird ringing has been passed on to others in the Club and we have all benefited from her wisdom through the many talks she has given to the Club, beginning with the Birds of Ethiopia in 1978, via Birds and Problems in Portugal in 1985, the Birds of Wales in 1992 and, more locally, the River Birds of the Monnow in 2004. A talk focusing on Grey Wagtails and Dippers in 1982 was followed most recently in 2016 on her long-term research into the ecology of Dippers, with hair-raising tales of long ladders and clambering into hard-to-reach nesting sites at an age when most of us get exhausted even thinking about such adventures! We are honoured to have Steph as a member of the Club.
