Herefordshire Photographic Society have an upcoming presentation by Andrew Fusek Peters which may be of interest to HOC members as it covers quite a bit of birdlife.

Andrew Fusek Peters is a conservation photographer currently on commission with the National Trust and Natural England. His books include Upland, Wilderland and the new National Trust guidebook to the Long Mynd.

If HOC members are interested, the meeting is on Thursday October 18th at Bartestree Village Hall from 7:15pm (7:30 start).  They charge a nominal fee of £2 to cover biscuits/tea & coffee and the entry fee.

21st September

The meeting on Sept 27th at Upton Warren has been cancelled due to maintenance work being carried out at the site. A new meeting on Oct 16th has been arranged for the Newport Wetlands and Goldcliff. See the Field Trips page.

21st July

Updated directions for the joint meeting with Butterfly Conservation at Wigmore Rolls on 31st July. Approaching from the south on A4110, turn left on the minor road opposite the school in Wigmore. Follow this for approx. 1 mile and park on the right in small layby, where a Forestry Commission steel barrier can be seen. Grid reference SO 397688. Meet here at 10.30am.

Rose-coloured Starling found by Mike Bailey in Orcop. Park in the Fountain Inn public car park HR2 8EP, SO479279. From the car park walk NE uphill and take 2nd left. The bird was initially on feeders in the back garden of Rose Cottage HR2 8SD at 13.45 but then flew off with mobile Starling flock. It is presumed still to be in the area. Respect the privacy of residents at all times.

                                            Change of date

It has been necessary to change the date of the HOC/Herefordshire Walking Festival walk round Garway Hill. 29th April  Hobby Survey

The Gloucester Raptor Monitoring Group has an ambitious plan to survey a Hectad (a 10 x 10 Kilometre square) for the presence of Hobbies. The area concerned is SO52, an area of 100 square kilometres centered on St Owens Cross in south Herefordshire and enclosed by the grid squares SO5029, 5929, SO5020 and 5920. The map is visible at

The Ring Ouzels have arrived on Garway Hil. HOC have arranged a meeting  to see them on Monday 24th April at 9 30 am.  Meet at the end of the Sun Lane (SO444:247). William E. Beckwith’s Nineteenth century Birds of Shropshire, with notes on surrounding districts.

Shropshire lacks a nineteenth century Avifauna because the man working on one died in 1892 halfway through writing the species accounts.  All his work, including nine separately-published avifauna drafts will be appear in November in “William E. Beckwith’s Nineteenth century Birds of Shropshire, with notes on surrounding districts”

At Brockhall the farmers have treated a large area of the grass between the gate and the bench with slurry. It is possible to walk around the area which is very wet but Wellingtons recommended, gas mask useful.

Can I remind everyone to complete their records for 2016 and get them in by the end of the month. The best way is to enter them directly on BirdTrack. Alternatively, there is a spreadsheet that can be used and then the records can be emailed to the data officer, Chris Robinson who will enter them onto BirdTrack for you. Paper records should be sent to the webmaster / county recorder or to Jim Wilkinson. Any questions should be emailed to the county recorder -

Monday 10th January

Nice picture of a Common Snipe from Angela Starling photographed in her garden at Mansel Lacy recently posted in the Members’ photos.

Z1213 the White Stork of Polish origin has been in the county for 6 months and appears to be overwintering satisfactorily. He is largely in the Dinedor / Holme Lacy area. New pictures posted.

Picture of a Goldcrest from John Buttriss posted. Difficult bird to photograph - not only are they tiny, but they never stop moving. This bird was moving rapidly and the wings are blurred, but the photo works because the head and the eye are frozen.

Pics of the Med Gull once again commuting between BGP and Kenchester. It is missing some primaries from the right wing so from the right it appears all white. But from the left some residual black can be seen in the primaries showing it is a second year bird. Also pics of the whimbrel, ringed and little ringed plovers from Brockhall.

The flock of golden plover are back in the field beside the A47 just south of Hereford opposite the Bullinghope turn. I counted 155. There are several skylarks with them. Picture in the members’ picture gallery.
