Position statement regarding Mortimer Forest

Many of you will be aware of a proposed development by the Forestry Commission and its commercial partner Forest Holidays to build holiday chalets in Mortimer Forest.  The proposal, not yet formally submitted to Herefordshire County Council, has attracted much critical attention.

The Club has reviewed the records we hold for the High Vinnals 1km square, being the closest to the proposed development, and of the 52 species recorded, 14 are red listed and 7 amber listed.  The Committee is preparing a response to the proposal, and should a formal planning application be lodged, will respond accordingly.

In the meantime, we have been in touch with the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust who are working closely with the Shropshire Wildlife Trust on this matter, to offer our support and to endorse their position statement, which can be seen at:

The Club will not be signing any of the various petitions that are circulating, as these are not able to taken into account as evidence during any consideration of objections to planning applications.  However, if any individuals wish to express their support to the campaign, they are able do so at:

We will keep members updated on any further developments.
